Light the Lamp

Asato ma sadgamaya (From ignorance, lead me to truth)
Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya ( From darkness, lead me to light)
Mrtyorma amrtam gamaya ( From death, lead me to immortality)
Om shanti shanti shanti (Om peace peace peace)

This is a sanskrit prayer which in short prays to seek the truth which leads to freedom from negative emotions and sprouting of our true nature of love, care and kindness.

It also prays to lead us towards the light of knowledge which is the only way to destroy the darkness of ignorance.

Thirdly it prays to seek immortality by attaining freedom from death. Which means understanding the pure consciousness or soul which is the basis of our existence.

Finally it prays for peace on 3 levels of consciousness that is the waking, dreaming and sleeping also the three worlds- earth, heaven and hell as well the body, mind and spirit.

Peace can only be achieved when we are aware of the truth and hence free from ignorance and darkness.

Just as a tiny light is sufficient to dispel intense darkness, a positive thought is sufficient to dispel the negative ones in our minds. We need to cultivate the habit of being in the positive, being in the light.

Yes, its a difficult task and yes, its easily said than done, however it is not impossible and only needs efforts from ourselves. Cultivate a positive habit. It maybe anything like meditation, chanting or a small selfless act on daily basis which will help us keep focussed. Talk to friends, read and listen to motivational literature and if necessary seek help.

It is we ourselves who can light the lamp of knowledge and dispel ignorance from our heart and realise that despite all its faults the world is a beautiful place.

  1. Earth, heaven and hell are ultimately 3 mental states – reality, aspiration and unwanted.

I like how you include ‘dreaming’ as a state of consciousness.

Thanks for joining in, and wishing you a Happy Diwali! 🪔🪔
